The pond was kind to swimmers this summer. We had a algae free swimming season and many of the goals that were set by the town, the White Pond Advisory Committe and commited citizens were reached.
* The town of Concord and White Pond Associates teamed up to offer day passes for Concord residents who wanted to swim at the beach but were not season card holders. This step ensures that all Concord residents have access to the pond and can enjoy this shared natural resource.
* The Select Board voted to prohibit swimming from town owned land again this year and the rangers returned for a second season to ensure that there was no swimming from Sachem's Cove. This policy enforced by the rangers means that the impact of day visitors on the pond, the fragile ec0-system and on the surrounding neighborhoods has been greatly reduced. There are no longer any traffic issues of speeding and parking which means public saftey has been restored for residents.
* The EPA and the White Pond Advisory Committee cooperated on a cyanobateria monitoring program to check on the water quality of the pond on a regular basis. Unfortunately, there were several algae blooms after the swimming season proving the need for permanent erosion controls.
These erosion controls are scheduled to be installed this year.
* Our state representative, Cory Atkins, secured $50,000 for erosion control around the pond. This money will be used by the Natural Resources Department to remediate the many erosion sites on town owned land which contribute to the storm run-off into the pond.
* White Pond Associates installed new catch basins on the access road to help alleviate storm run-off. However, during heavy fall rains, these catch basins were overwhelmed by the amount of water and were not able to prevent run off from entering the pond. It is evident that a re-grading of the access road is needed.
